Becoming a doctor requires acquisition of a sound knowledge about people, their diseases and how to treat them. However, to achieve the state of a successful and respectable medical professional, development of one’s personality is equally important. Possession of soft skills for a healer such as empathy, humility, leadership and communication skills is now emphasized more than ever. Nonetheless, medical curricula worldwide are known to be loaded with information, and with much focus on successful delivery of knowledge, development of these soft skills in a medical undergraduate is sometimes not adequately addressed.
Being aware of this void, PeMSAA decided that it needs to play a role in inculcating these skills among the budding doctors. The new PeMSAA lecture series on Soft Skills Development is the outcome of this decision. These lectures will sensitize medical students to attributes that they are expected to consciously develop in themselves in order to become worthy successors to Hippocrates..

A programme of conducting regional clinical meetings in association with clinical societies in the peripheries was proposed by Prof. Vasanthi Pinto during her tenure as the President. It was an initiative to reach out to the alumni rendering services at various peripheral institutes, and disseminate contextually relevant knowledge. Along with that, there was the opportunity to strengthen the bond between them and the PeMSAA. However, this endeavour did not materialize as the COVID-19 pandemic became a hindrance to organizing any such event.
While physical gatherings were no longer possible, the new Council was resolute on implementing this programme nonetheless. Adapting to the new normal, “Regional Clinical Meetings” are now being conducted virtually. The first session was organized in association with ‘Ratnapura Clinical Society. The second session was organized in association with ‘Matale Clinical Society’.

Organizing complementary lectures for medical undergraduates has been an activity that the PeMSAA has been enthusiastically involved in for more than a decade now. For the extended staff whose teaching is otherwise limited to ward classes before the final year, this exercise established a platform to deliver talks to whole batches of students especially close to the Final MBBS examination. For students this has been an opportunity to clarify doubts, revise, and orient themselves towards the examination. Above all, it fostered the bond between the students and teachers.
This year, the COVID-19 pandemic which has been hindering the undergraduate education throughout the country became a huge blow to the onsite learning of medical students. It was then that the PeMSAA decided to step up this ongoing programme to fill the existing void, at least to a certain extent.
The revitalized programme, now known as “PeMSAA Evening Talks” with the caption “Alumni Giving a Helping Hand”, became an instant success. Consultants from all corners of the country, professors and retired professors, and also the most recent graduates, all united under the banner of PeMSAA to lend a hand to the budding doctors. The first set of lectures consisted of two or three 2-hour talks scheduled for every week addressing a wide variety of relevant topics, many upon the request of students themselves. Currently the second phase is underway, which is a set of case-based discussions along with relevant MCQs, scheduled as one session per week.
The recordings of the lecture series are shared in the public domain for the benefit of the young doctors of the whole country.
